With what acceleration 'a' should the box in the figure descend so that a body of mass M placed in it exerts a force $Mg/4$ on the base

 

\[(a)\;3g/4 \quad (b)\; g/4 \quad (c)\;g/2 \quad(d)\;g/8 \]

If the box is accelerated downwards
$Mg-N=Ma$
Here $N=\large\frac{Mg}{4}$
$Mg-\large\frac{Mg}{4}$$=Ma$
$a=\large\frac{3g}{4}$
hence a is the correct answer.
