A uniform thick string of length 5 m is resting on horizontal frictionless surface. If it is pulled by a horizontal force of 5N from one end, the tension in the string at 1 m from the force applied is

\[(a)\;4N \quad (b)\;zero \quad (c)\;5N \quad (d)\;1N \]

Let mass per unit length of string be 'm'
Total mass $=5m$
$m\bar a=F$
$5ma =5$
$a=\large\frac{1}{m}$
$T=4ma=4m \times \large\frac{1}{m}$$=4N$
Hence a is the correct answer.
