The motion of a sphere moving on a rough horizontal surface change from pure sliding (without rolling) to pure rolling (with out slipping) . In this process, the force of friction. 1) initially acts opposite to the direction of motion and later in the direction of motion. 2) causes linear retardation 3) causes angular acceleration 4) stops acting when pure rolling begins. Which of the following is correct?

a) 1,2 b) 2,4 c) 1,3 d) 1,4

1 Answer

Initially, friction opposes motion as sliding motion takes place. Once it starts to roll, friction acts along motion’s direction.

hence, no linear retardation and angular acceleration obviously starts to exist.
