Answer: prevent salt hydrolysis
A few drops of conc. $H_SO_4$ added to a solution of $FeSO_4$ [or $Al_2(SO_4)_3$] - a salt of strong acid, and weak base, prevents salt hydrolysis and thus helps in getting a clear solution.
