Answer: Convert ferrous ions to ferric ions
To oxidise ferrous ion into ferric ion otherwise $Fe^{2+}$ is not completely precipitated as $Fe(OH)_2$, as ferrous hydroxide is more soluble in water than $Fe(OH)_3$.
