In the following discussion, the solvent is water. The van't Hoff factor, symbol i, expresses how may ions and particles are formed (on an average) in a solution from one formula unit of solute.
One formula unit of $Na_2SO_3$ creates 2 particles in a solution $\xrightarrow[]{H_2O}2Na^++SO_3^{2-}$
$\therefore$ Van't Hoff factor $i=3$
