Which of the following is the correct order of bond angle ?

$\begin{array}{1 1}(a)\;CH_4 > NH_3 > H_2O\\(b)\; NH_3 > H_2O > CH_4\\(c)\;H_2O > NH_3 > CH_4\\(d)\;CH_4 > H_2O > NH_3\end{array}$

1 Answer

$CH_4 (109^{\large\circ}) > NH_3(107.5^{\large\circ}) > H_2O(105.5^{\large\circ})$
This is due to according to VSEPR theory, more the number of lp's on a central atom, the greater is the contraction caused in the angle between the bp's.
Hence (a) is the correct answer.
