( a ) Alveolar wall, Fibrous tissue, Endothelium of alveolar capillaries, Red blood cells ; A, B, C constitute basal membrane
( b ) Alveolar wall (the thin squamous epithelium of alveoli), Fibrous tissue, Alveolar capillaries, Blood ; A, B, C constitute basal membrane
( c ) Alveolar wall, Fibrous tissue, Alveolar capillaries, Blood ; A, B, C constitute diffusion membrane
( d ) Alveolar wall (the thin squamous epithelium of alveoli), Basement substance, Endothelium of alveolar capillaries, Red blood cells ; A, B, C constitute diffusion membrane

(D) is the right answer.

The diffusion membrane is made up of three major layers namely, the thin squamous epithelium of alveoli, the endothelium of alveolar capillaries and the basement substance in between them. Can be easily remembered as ABC in order - A for Alveolar wall (the thin squamous epithelium of alveoli), B for Basement substance, C for capillary Endothelium
