A sample of wustite $Fe_xO$ contains one $Fe(III)$ for every three $Fe(II).$ Calculate the value of x.

Answer : $Fe_8O_{9-}$
Amount of $Fe(III) =(1/4)\;mol$
and Amount of $Fe(II)= (3/4) mol$
Let x be 1 mol of iron atom. We will have
Total negative charges $=x(2)$
To satisfy electrical neutrality , we have
Total positive charges = Total negative charges
$\large\frac{9}{4} $$mol =2x$
or $ x= (9/8) mol$
Hence, composition of the compositions is $FeO_{9/8}$ or $Fe_8 O_9$
