Consider the following one-dimensional motion. A ball thrown directly upward rises to a highest point and falls back into the thrower’s hand. Which of the following statements are true?

(1) The average velocity is zero

(2) The instantaneous velocity is highest when the ball is at the highest point

(3) The instantaneous velocity is zero when the ball is at the highest point

(4) The instantaneous velocity is negative when the ball is at the highest point

Answer: (1) and (3)
(1): The average velocity for the thrown ball is zero because the ball returns to the starting point; thus its displacement is zero.
(3): The one point at which the instantaneous velocity is zero is at the top of the motion.
