By pythagorus theorem we have
$\begin{align*}AB^2 + BC^2 &= AC^2 \\ AB^2 + 8^2 & = 10^2 \\ AB^2 & = 10^2 - 8^2 \\ AB^2 &= 100 - 64 \\ AB^2& = 36 \\ AB &= 6\end{align*}$
$\begin{align*}Area & = \frac{1}{2} \times b \times h \\ & = \frac{1}{2} \times 6 \times 8 \\ & = 24 cm^2 \end{align*}$
