Metallic bonding is what holds metal atoms together in the solid and liquid states. The Group 1 metals, Li-Cs, they contribute only one electron per atom to metallic bonding. The Group 2 metals, Be-Ba, they release two electrons per atom to metallic bonding. As two electrons are available in Group2 to participate in the bond formation , these elements have strong metallic bonding and high cohesive energy , hence these elements are harder than group 1.
