Determine order and degree (if defined) of differential equation \[y'''+2y''+y'=0\]

  • The highest order derivative present in the differential equation determines the order of the equation.The power to which this derivative is raised determines the degree of the equation.
Step 1:
The highest order derivative present in the differential equation is $\large\frac{d^3y}{dx^3}$.Hence the order is 3.
Step 2:
It is polynomial equation in $y'''$ and the highest power raised to $\large\frac{d^3y}{dx^3}$ is 1,so the degree is 1.
