A solenoid is connect to a battery so that a steady current flows through it. If an iron core is inserted into the solenoid, will the current increases or decreases ? Explain ?

(a) Increases
(b) decreases
(c) increases at first and then decreases
(d) decreases at first and then increases

1 Answer

The current will decrease. Because by inserting an iron core in the solenoid, magnetic field an hence magnetic flux linked with the solenoid increases. By Lenz's law the emf induced in the solenoid will oppose this increase, which can achieve by a decreases at first then increases.
