How does a mutagen induce mutation? Explain with an example.

Mutagen changes the alignment and composition of nitrogenous bases of DNA that results in changed product of the gene. For example, nitrous acid is a common industrial chemical, deaminates  cytocin to uracil,  guanine to xanthine and adenine to hypoxanthine . It changes A-T base pair to H-C, C-G base pair with U-A and C-x. Such base pairs get either eliminated or replaced with others causing a change in the gene expression.
